What's VNC?

Virtual Network Computing (VNC)

Using VNC is a way to remotely control another computer. It allows you to work from one computer on one or more computers on your local network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN). They're very handy to control, say a server, in a another part of the building to restart services, install new programs or perform troubleshooting.

VNC setups can often be platform dependent, but more and more VNC software allows you to connect from say a PC to a Mac and also in reverse. The best VNC server we've stumbled upon is Redstone's Vine Server 3.0. You can download it to a Mac OS X computer and a Windows PC can then control a OS X PPC or Intel Mac. The setup is quick and on a LAN the thing just works.

You can also set up Apple Remote Desktop on Mac OS X server or client computers and Terminal Services on Windows Servers. This allows for more sophisticated and robust remote work. In conjunction with well setup VPN tunnel we can then check your network, backups and perform basic troubleshooting without actually being on the premises.
